Driving Into the Future: Aptera’s Solar-Powered Car Turns Heads in Carlsbad

A local company is reimagining what it means to go green on the road. Based in Carlsbad, Aptera Motors is making waves with its sleek, ultra-efficient solar-powered vehicle—a futuristic three-wheeler that looks more like a spacecraft than a car.
Aptera’s vehicle boasts a lightweight design and aerodynamic body that can go up to 1,000 miles on a single charge, with built-in solar panels providing up to 40 miles of free driving per day—just from the sun. That means for many drivers, you may never need to plug in at all.
The company says it’s aiming to revolutionize transportation with sustainability, efficiency, and affordability in mind—and with a local footprint in North County, Carlsbad is right at the center of this innovation.
Keep an eye out—you might just spot one of these solar supercars cruising by the coast.

Vista Reverses Course on Controversial Bike Lane Barriers

In a surprising U-turn, the City of Vista is removing recently installed berms and bollards meant to protect cyclists—just months after spending $1.5 million to put them in. Why the change? City officials say the barriers were causing more harm than good, making emergency access harder and frustrating both drivers and cyclists. Mayor John Franklin even called them an “obstacle course.”
While some riders say the barriers made them feel safer, over 1,000 residents reportedly voiced concerns. The removal, focused in District 4, will cost an estimated $204,795 and begin later this summer. As the debate over bike safety and street design continues, Vista becomes a cautionary tale in balancing protection, mobility, and public feedback.

Big Moves on the Bayfront: Massive Sports Complex Planned for Chula Vista

Chula Vista’s waterfront is about to level up in a major way. A new sports and entertainment district is in the works for the Bayfront, anchored by a state-of-the-art tennis center affiliated with a world-renowned athlete (who hasn’t been named yet 👀). The project includes plans for a boutique hotel, retail, restaurants, public plazas, and performance spaces—transforming the area into a true live-play destination.
Led by Toll Brothers and approved by the Port of San Diego, this project is part of the city’s long-term vision to make the Bayfront a regional attraction that blends recreation, tourism, and community. With exclusive negotiations now underway, the future of South Bay is looking bright—and active.
Stay tuned as this game-changing development takes shape.

Legal Showdown Over Del Mar’s Surf Cup Soccer Fields

A legal battle is heating up over the use of the former polo fields in Del Mar—now home to Surf Cup Sports. Residents in the neighboring Fairbanks Polo Club community have sued the City of San Diego, claiming it’s allowing commercial soccer events that violate a decades-old deed restriction limiting use to passive, non-commercial recreation. In response, the city is now moving to eliminate those restrictions altogether by modifying the original 1983 grant deed—effectively trying to render the lawsuit moot.
The city’s proposal has sparked major backlash. Local residents, planning groups, and preservation coalitions argue the move disregards public trust and removes long-standing protections that were meant to limit traffic, noise, and large-scale commercial activity. Critics see it as a “backdoor deal,” especially since Surf Cup Sports brings in sizable lease revenue for the city and is actively expanding its footprint in the area.
The case has been paused until December while the City Council considers the deed changes. But opponents say they’re not backing down—and that this fight is far from over.
