Big things are coming to Westfield UTC. The University City mall’s 70,000-square-foot luxury expansion is set to begin its phased opening in early 2026, transforming the former Nordstrom space into one of Southern California’s premier designer destinations. Already home to Hermès, Louis Vuitton, Tiffany & Co., and more, UTC will soon welcome heavy hitters like Restoration Hardware (RH), a full Chanel fashion boutique, Tom Ford, Carolina Herrera, plus two new restaurants along La Jolla Village Drive. With more luxury brands and even expanded valet service, the upgrade cements UTC as San Diego’s go-to hub for high-end shopping, dining, and lifestyle.

California Housing Costs Are Eating Incomes Alive

California housing isn’t just expensive—it’s devouring paychecks. Whether you rent or own, the numbers are brutal: 27% of renters and 15% of homeowners spend over half their income just keeping a roof overhead, the highest rates in the nation. Renters face soaring costs—median rent hit $2,104 in 2024, up 30% since 2019—while homeowners juggle $2,280 a month in mortgages, taxes, insurance, and fees, 70% above the U.S. average. The twist? Renters lose every dollar to rising rents, while owners watch equity-building dreams crushed by skyrocketing costs. Different struggles, same outcome: Californians are sacrificing more than ever just to stay housed.

San Diego’s dining scene is getting a big celebrity glow-up—Gwyneth Paltrow’s Goop Kitchen is headed to One Paseo in Carmel Valley. Known for its “Certified Clean” eats—think no refined sugars, additives, soy, or seed oils—Goop Kitchen delivers wellness-driven meals that actually taste amazing. With Michelin-trained chef Kim Floresca at the helm, the menu leans plant-forward and flavorful, featuring dishes like the Goop Teriyaki Bowl, Mushroom “Al Pastor” Lettuce Wraps, and the cult-favorite G.P. Bahn Mi. Already a hit in L.A. and O.C., Goop Kitchen blends convenience with conscious eating, and its San Diego debut at One Paseo will only elevate the lifestyle hub’s status as a must-visit destination. In a survey of 1,000 adults by Clever Real Estate, the Golden State ranked No. 2 most desirable (behind Florida) but also snagged the crown as No. 1 least desirable. One thing’s clear: California is never boring, even if it did land mid-pack at No. 29.

For the very first time, Sea Shepherd is bringing its mission from the ocean to the table with the Sustainable Food Festival at Balboa Park (Presidents Way Lawn) on Saturday, Sept. 27, 11 AM–5 PM. Celebrate global flavors and eco-friendly foodways with 100+ local chefs, artisans, and nonprofits showcasing sustainable practices. Enjoy chef demos, panel discussions, live music, kid-friendly activities, and plenty of tastings. A portion of proceeds supports local nonprofits, and Sea Shepherd’s San Diego volunteers will be on-site with campaign updates, merch, and ways to get involved in protecting our oceans. That search led her to Bonsall, where she saw the perfect opportunity to pair her baked goods with organic coffee, smoothies, and acai bowls—all made with quality, sustainable ingredients. The name Plume & Brew comes from the wild peacocks that roam Bonsall; one, affectionately named Harold, often greets guests at the drive-thru. Today, Plume & Brew is more than a coffee stop—it’s a community-driven spot where organic food, local roasting, and a touch of whimsy come together.
