Why Isnāt More Housing Getting Built in Unincorporated San Diego? A New Report Finally Explains It

A long-awaited county report reveals why some rural and unincorporated communities ā places that need thousands of new homes ā arenāt seeing much development at all. Some barriers are unavoidable, like steep terrain and low land values that make projects unprofitable. But others are self-inflicted: conflicting zoning rules, shifting county regulations, and years of limited investment in basic amenities like sidewalks, parks, and infrastructure.
The study highlights four communities ā Buena Creek, Casa de Oro, Lakeside, and Spring Valley ā and shows how each faces its own mix of challenges, from outdated water systems to legal battles over traffic standards.

Another Big Storm Is Headed for San Diego ā Hereās What to Expect

San Diego is bracing for its third major storm in a week, with rain sweeping in Thursday night and continuing into Friday ā bringing up to an inch at the coast and nearly double that in the mountains. Lightning, gusty winds, and even a dusting of mountain snow are all on the table, and the city is already dealing with a growing pothole surge from the last round of storms.
But the story doesnāt end there ā with record-early rainfall, flooding concerns, and a warm Thanksgiving ahead, thereās a lot more to this weather pattern than just another wet weekend.

š¬ Reel Recap + Real Details
Balboa Park Parking

Big changes are coming to Balboa Park: starting Jan. 5, the city will begin charging for parking for the first time in the parkās 100+ year history. Residents can buy monthly, quarterly, or annual passes (starting at $30), while non-residents will pay more ā and daily parking rates will range from $5 to $16 depending on the lot.
But the bigger story? The city is relying on this program to help close a major budget gap⦠and early projections show it may bring in far less money than expected. That means everything from library hours to recreation services could be on the line if revenue falls short.
Curious what the new fees look like, why the revenue estimates dropped so sharply, and how this could reshape Balboa Park and city services?

š 4S Ranch | 10514 Craftsman Way
Mark Wahlbergās newest restaurant, Flecha Cantina, has officially landed in 4S Ranch ā taking over the former Miguelās Cocina space after what might be the fastest restaurant flip San Diego has seen. The sign changed, the lights got brighter, and suddenly Wahlbergās tequila-forward Mexican concept was open for business.
But behind the soft opening buzz is a story with layers: the fall of Miguelās after its E. coli crisis, Wahlbergās expanding business empire, and the mixed reactions from locals wondering how a Boston-born actor plans to win over a community known for its diverse culinary expectations. Whether Flecha becomes a neighborhood hit or just a celebrity experiment is still up in the air ā and the full story is worth the read.
