50 years later, ‘Jaws’ still making waves — but in shark science!

The iconic thriller Jaws changed Hollywood forever when it debuted in 1975, sparking a summer blockbuster craze and terrifying millions with its great white shark. Now, on the film’s 50th anniversary, it’s clear that Jaws did more than just scare audiences — it ignited a curiosity that helped fuel groundbreaking shark research right here in San Diego. Scientists at Scripps Institution of Oceanography and the Long Beach Shark Lab have used that legacy to deepen our understanding of these misunderstood ocean predators — showing us they’re not monsters, just vital players in a balanced ecosystem.
From fearing sharks to protecting them, the shift has been dramatic. Today’s research reveals how sharks contribute to healthy ocean life, which ultimately impacts our daily lives on land. So while Jaws made us wary of what lurks beneath, it also inspired a new respect — proving sometimes you need a bigger boat to discover bigger truths.

Get ready, San Diego — NASCAR might be zooming through your city streets in 2026!

Imagine high-speed race cars roaring past palm trees and downtown landmarks, turning our laid-back city into a thrilling raceway. NASCAR is close to sealing a deal to bring an electrifying Cup Series street race right to San Diego’s heart, making it easier than ever for fans to catch the action up close.
Former NASCAR driver Boris Said, who knows a thing or two about street racing, is pumped for the event — and might even come out of retirement for the occasion! The race would likely weave through 8 to 12 turns along scenic bayside roads or downtown streets, promising tight corners, intense racing battles, and a whole lot of adrenaline.
With San Diego’s stunning waterfront as a backdrop, this could be the ultimate combo of speed and scenery. While official details are still under wraps, gear up for a possible 2026 race that puts NASCAR right where the action is — in our city, on our streets, and in front of our eyes?
Big changes could be coming to Vista’s iconic Pepper Tree Frosty spot!

The family-owned eatery, a local favorite since the 1950s, is teaming up with developers on plans for a fresh new mixed-use project — including 109 apartments and retail space — right on their 1.3-acre lot. Don’t worry though: Pepper Tree Frosty isn’t going anywhere. In fact, it’s set to get a modern upgrade and become part of Vista’s evolving arts district.
While some longtime residents are holding onto the nostalgia and raising concerns about traffic, the project aims to breathe new life into downtown Vista with thoughtful design and community benefits — including nearly 25% of apartments set aside for low- and moderate-income residents. It’s a big vision that honors the past while looking ahead to a vibrant future.
