San Marcos is going blue… How the city plans to become a “Blue Zone" with residents living to 100 years old.

San Marcos is making headlines again. Mayor Rebecca Jones is leading the city's initiative to become a "Blue Zone," focusing on improving community health, longevity, and well-being by implementing lifestyle changes inspired by areas where people live the longest, with plans to start with a community assessment and bring in healthier food options and more recreation opportunities. The city is partnering with Blue Zones Project for this transformation, aiming to make healthy choices easier for residents.

Key Aspects of the Initiative

  • Goal: To enhance resident quality of life, promote healthy living, and foster strong social connections.

  • Blue Zones Principles: Incorporating elements like sense of purpose, daily movement, healthy eating, and stress reduction.

  • Next Steps: The city will start with a "Blue Zones Ignite" assessment to gather data and identify areas for improvement in the community environment.

  • Community Involvement: Attend the keynote event on March 17 from 5-7:30pm to share your insight, ask questions, and participate in the early development process for San Marcos

What are Blue Zones?

  • Blue Zones are regions identified by researchers where people live exceptionally long and healthy lives.

  • The Blue Zones Project helps cities implement environmental and policy changes to encourage these healthy habits.

Two San Diego eateries named most beautiful new restaurants in America

Carlsbad’s Michelin-starred Lilo was ranked #4 on the list of most beautiful new restaurants for 2025. Their food is delicious and aesthetically pleasing, but this award was given for their sleek architecture and natural garden elements. This small, 24-seat dining experience does not compromise on comfort. The space is elegant and charming simultaneously, with bright, locally sourced dishes to complement the vibes.

La Jolla’s Lucien also made the list, ranked at #9. Although it doesn’t have a Michelin star yet, chef Elijah Arizmendi has trained and worked in three Michelin starred restaurants over the years. It shows in their artistry, flavor combinations, and course design. The interior is moody and warm, with dark charcoal and deep wood profiles throughout the space. Both of these restaurants will surely be a splurge for date night, but they may very well be worth it!

🎬 Reel Recap + Real Details

Rent prices dip in San Diego

New data shows that rent prices in San Diego are going down. This is the first time in 15 years that prices have dropped, according to CoStar, a company that tracks real estate data. For the past six months, rents have been decreasing each month in the area, which is a change after many years of rising prices. Josh Ohl from CoStar Group San Diego said the data looks at buildings with five or more units, covering about 289,000 units in the county. More apartments are also sitting empty for longer than usual for San Diego. The vacancy rate increased from 2.7% at the end of 2021 to 5.9%, the highest in 15 years. If you're renewing your lease, it might be a good time to negotiate. Since some units are empty for weeks or months, landlords might be willing to make a deal to keep tenants at the same rent instead of increasing it.

Harland Brewing opening soon in 4S Ranch/Del Sur

The new Harland Brewing restaurant is coming to 4S Ranch/Del Sur - and this one’s leaning way more neighborhood restaurant than taproom. Delicious smash burgers, fish tacos, short ribs, brunch, and a kid’s menu… While I had the pleasure of trying it before doors open, they are hoping to open to the public before the end of the month.
